About me

Foto MA Barcelo

I am passionate about statistics and mathematics, but above all its impact on Society, through its multiple applications. In my free time, you can find me enjoying the mountains or the sea, ideally in my land, Mallorca or reading a good book. Traveling is another of my passions, and getting to know other places, cultures and people will never cease to fascinate me.

Curious by nature, wanting to constantly learn and interact with other disciplines, I have found in applied statistics what the theoretical knowledge of mathematics could not provide me.

I love participating in projects whose impact has an impact on Society and that apply the theory learned to the real world, allowing a transfer of knowledge that, together with education and research, are the fundamental objectives of the University.

My personal trajectory is varied. With a mathematical background, with a statistical vocation, I expand my knowledge in many other disciplines through the context provided by the projects in which I work and with the support of the research group to which I belong, the Grupo de Investigación en Estadística, Econometría y Salud (GRECS) of the UdG.

GRECS is a multidisciplinary research group made up of statisticians, epidemiologists, economists, physicians, and specialists in the environment, biomedicine, and bioinformatics. All of us share our desire to learn, along with the passion for applied statistics in the different fields of health and economics.

Influence and trajectory

PhD in Mathematics from the University of Girona and a degree in Mathematics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

Currently, I am an Associate Professor in the area of Quantitative Methods for Economics and Business in the Department of Economics at the University of Girona and I am accredited by the Spanish 'Agencia Nacional de Evaluación de la Calidad y Acreditación (ANECA)' as a Full Professor from March 2018.

Previously, I was a research assistant at the Respiratory and Environmental Research Unit at the Municipal Institute for Medical Research in Barcelona (IMIM-IMAS) (currently ISGlobal , previously CREAL) and at INSALUD in Palma de Mallorca.

Regarding my research activity, I am a member of the Research Group on Statistics, Econometrics and Health (GRECS- UdG ) of the University of Girona and also of the Consolidated Research Group at the national level, CIBER of Epidemiology and Public Health (CIBERESP) . Likewise, I am a collaborating researcher at the Center for Research in Health and Economics (CRES-UPF) at Pompeu Fabra University .

On the other hand, at the regional level, I am a member of the consolidated Research groups of the Generalitat de Catalunya 'Compositional and Spatial Data Analysis' (COSDA) (2021 SGR 01197) (2017 SGR 656) (2014 SGR 551) and 'Metabolism, Hypertension and Cardiovascular Risk' (METHARISC) of the Jordi Gol Primary Care Research Institute (IDIAP Jordi Gol) in Girona.

I also collaborate with the Functional Unit for Motor Neuron Disease of the Bellvitge University Hospital.

I did a research stay at the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, January-June 1999), where I worked with Dr. Álvaro Muñoz.

Research activity

My main lines of research are both methodological and applied. Among the methodological, I would highlight the survival analysis, mainly multivariate; space-time models; mixed models and Bayesian statistics. Among those applied, I would mainly point out clinical epidemiology, in diseases such as motor neuron disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, especially), cardiovascular risk factors and complex chronic diseases; environmental epidemiology and cancer epidemiology. Lately I am developing a new line that we could call mixed that combines both the methodology and its applications. In it I would place the data and evidence from the real world (Real World Data and Real World Evidence), the statistical models for the prevention, detection and impact of epidemics and the Alt Empordà Health and Social Observatory, Girona.
