The dynamic behaviour of metabolic sindrome and its components in an eight-year population-based cohort from the Mediterranean

Our aim in this study was to analyze the dynamic behavior of the metabolic syndrome and its components in a large population cohort of a Mediterranean region.

The results of the study demonstrate that the components of metabolic syndrome do not experience a synchronic evolution. Alterations related to glucose metabolism and high blood pressure are the first to appear and, therefore, act as biomarkers for predicting the metabolic syndrome. Despite being essential for the onset of the metabolic syndrome, obesity and lipid disorders develop later.
